27 OCTOBER 2015, Langkawi - Firefly, in collaboration with the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), held an event today to celebrate its inaugural flight from Kota Bharu to Langkawi. The event was attended by VIPs such as YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Mukhriz Tun Mahathir - Chief Minister of Kedah; Tan Sri Khalid Bin Ramli - Chief Executive Officer of LADA; En Arif Jaafar - Senior Airport Manager of Malaysia Airports Sdn. Bhd. (MASB), YB Dato Hj. Mohd Rawi Bin Abd Hamid - Ayer Hangat State Assemblyman, and YB Nor Saidi Bin Hj. Nanyan - Kuah State Assemblyman.
Also in attendance were representatives from Langkawi International Airport Authorities, Ministry of Tourism, Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Information Center – Kelantan, as well as members from the Travel Trade and members of the media.
The inaugural flight, which marks the first of a planned flight-schedule of three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - departed from Kota Bharu, Kelantan at 11:30 a.m, and arrived in Langkawi at 12:55 p.m. Travelers from Kota Bharu were pleasantly surprised with parting gifts from the delegation at Kota Bharu, Kelantan led by YB Dato Haji Hassan Bin Mohaamood, the Culture, Tourism and Heritage Deputy Exco. When the near - capacity flight arrived at Langkawi International airport, they were greeted by a cultural performance provided by LADA.
Firefly Chief Executive Officer, Ignatius Ong said, “We at Firefly have worked tirelessly to champion value and convenience for the public, and the culmination of our hard work has made this strategic route a reality. This new route is especially strategic, as it bridges connectivity between Langkawi and the Northeast Malaysia. Firefly offers the highest frequency across the peninsular, and this new route will further reinforce this fact.”
Chief Minister of Kedah, YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Mukhriz Tun Mahathir further added, “Langkawi has consistently been one of Malaysia’s top tourist destinations, frequented by locals and internationals alike. With the new route now in operation, this will only bring about further improvement in tourist numbers.”
The new route is Firefly’s third route to and from Langkawi, after routes from Subang and Penang; and the fourth for Kelantan, after Subang, Penang and Johor Bahru.
“With this strategic route, Firefly aims not only to increase tourism between the Langkawi and Kelantan, but also encourage ease of doing business, as business travel is now more convenient than ever, with 3 flights offered every week,” Ong added.
